I wrote a few posts back about Mallory's umbilical hernia. After seeing a pediatric surgeon in Lubbock several times, we decided to move forward with having it repaired.
We were discharged that afternoon and her first request was chick-fil-a! She was not in much pain but she was very restless from the narcotics used during her procedure.
I was so nervous about this whole process. The procedure itself was relatively minor, but because it required an incision, Mallory had to be put under full anastesia. And I hated the thought of that!
An umbilical hernia not only causes an "outie" belly button, but it is actually a hole in the stomach that the bowel can loop into and become strangulated causing infection and a whole host of complications. Usually these holes close on their own right after birth, but sometimes for whatever reason they don't.
We took Mallory for her favorite meal the night before her surgery!

We were scheduled to arrive at the hospital at 7 am and after a lot of waiting around they took Mal back around 10:30. She was in recovery by 11:45 and was very sleepy. It was hard watching her be so out of it but it was a relief to be done!

The surgeon informed us that her hernia was unusually small and when she went in to repair it she found a 1 mm extra piece of umbilical skin that had grown that was keeping the hole from closing on its own. Once she clipped that skin, the hernia repaired instantly and required no internal stitches. She only sees this in about 1 in 100 hernia repairs! She was appreciative that we took care of it now, as it is not something that could have ever resolved on its own.
We were able to head back to Midland the next day and I am happy to report that she is fully recovered and well now! Not the most fun experience we've ever had, but I'm sure glad it's over!
